Video Yourself Writing on a Worksheet
Example: I want to show my students how to solve a math problem using my pencil and paper.
Use the Camera app on your teacher iPad OR your document camera to record yourself writing on a worksheet. While you are writing, you will speak/explain/teach. Another option could be demonstrating something with manipulatives. It would be best with an iPad stand, but given that we can’t provide this to all, you can DIY by just putting your iPad on top of a stack of boxes/above your hand. |
What tools do I need?
How do I record my video?
Check out the video for instructions. In this example, all you need is your teacher iPad and a little bit of DIY.
1. Recording Source: iPad, phone, document camera Worksheet, paper, composition tablet, white xerox paper etc. 2. Writing tools: Folder paper, composition tablet, pencil/markers/pen etc. It's probably better to use a marker to write because its bolder than a pencil and easier to see. |

What kinds of lessons would appropriate for this?
- Thinking Maps
- Problem Solving
- Modeling the writing process. Ex: taking ideas from a previous tree map and modeling how to write it in paragraph form.
- Worksheets (providing you have hardcopies when recording)
- Using manipulatives to explain something
- Anything you usually teach by writing on your whiteboard
- Anything you usually teach by writing/showing something under your document camera.
Tips for recording your 1st video:
- Start with the subject area you feel most confident teaching. Math might be a good place to start.
- Make sure you have all your supplies
- Start with a SHORT pre-recorded video (like 2-3 minutes).
- If you find yourself needing to record your like 5 times - that is NORMAL at the beginning. After you get the hang of this, it will get faster.
- You will feel crazy at first, cause you'll feel like you're talking to the wall.
- I highly recommend notifying others that you will be recording to prevent interruptions. The worst situation is when you're almost done with the video and someone walks into the room and starts talking to you while you're recording.

Jamie Ann Reyes used her Document Camera and Quicktime Players to pre-record herself explaining various strategies to solve Multiplication: Area Model, Distributive Method, Lattice Method, Partial Products, and Traditional. Each video was recorded as a SEPARATE video. I think that's smart because trying to record all in one perfect recording is extremely difficult. You'd probably need to use iMovie to do some editing. Using a marker helps students be able to see what you're writing.

Marisa Takeguchi used her DOCUMENT CAMERA to record herself modeling a portion of the writing process with students during Distance Learning. Notice how she referred back to the text by bringing in her iPad in view of the camera. That was an eBook she created in Book Creator to provide students with information about recycling. Rather than just saying "go back to the text" she actually modeled how she went back to it for information. Sorry for the feedback. We think there's some type of feedback when the iPad came in close contact with the DOCUMENT CAMERA.
